大英圖書館正朝「全球資源最開放」的機構邁進——從2013年起，館方開啟「機械策展人Mechanical Curator」專案，從館藏17～19世紀共計6萬5千本著作裡，挑選包括地圖、繪畫、插畫、信件、漫畫、海報、裝飾圖樣等圖片與相片，全數作為公眾領域（Public Domain）使用，亦即人們可免費下載、再製、使用這些資源，日前大英圖書館宣布迄今已有逾百萬張圖片經過分類並登錄大英圖書館flickr。

點開flickr網頁，與其說是資料庫，不如說是一場視覺博覽會的饗宴——機械策展人非常貼心，將百萬張圖片依照類別分為30多個相簿。如果你對視覺設計有興趣，不妨點閱「裝飾圖樣decoration」相簿；喜歡歷史，那麼「一次世界大戰World War I」替你長知識；愛看建築，「建築Architecture」「城堡Castles」相簿裡則有琳瑯滿目的版畫、手稿、測繪圖等等。

另外，「動物群Fauna」則是精工妙筆的動物寫實插畫，「書封特輯Book Covers」則見識到前人的設計美學，「太空與科幻小說特輯Space & Science Fiction」一窺過往年代宇宙觀。

難能可貴的是，每一張圖片除了有詳細出處來源、解說之外，也可透過註解連結至書籍出處。大英圖書館此舉除了鼓勵網民開放下載、使用、複製以提高歷史資料庫的曝光率之外，也號召網民「全民共筆」，亦即透過「標籤」動作，為百萬張圖片做更精細的分類與搜尋功能。

根據統計，迄今已有2億6千7百萬瀏覽人次、40萬個標籤，且各相簿圖片張數持續累積中。需要歷史圖片做研究、做設計、寫報告、教學嗎？大英圖書館野心奇大，欲滿足全球網民的需求。
